Not all that retro, over here anyway. 9 is Fine. ;) Just ask Paul.
I want to create a folder action script to print pdf files placed in a
folder on a 1997 Mac running OS 9.
Well, the hardware is a little retro. Anyway, ...
It drives an Apple Stylewriter
which is not capable of doing print spooling or offering network
printing.
Easy to fix. Get 'Local Talk Bridge' [1], which will connect your
AppleTalk-only printers to your Ethernet network so you can share them.
I have a stylewriter that is not an appletalk printer but just a local
printer.
That's just what I do with a StyleWriter and a LaserWriter that are
non-USB.
This is all to allow a small home network to print via this
7 year old printer, which does a fine job but currently requires a lot
of manual workaround to get a pdf to print.
I don't have problems printing PDF from Acrobat Reader 4/5 to a
StyleWriter,
etiher directly or on our LAN.
I'm sorry about the lack of clarity in my original post. I don't have
problems printing from the 1997 Mac to the stylewriter. What I want to
do is be able to use the iMac and a PowerBook to print to the
stylewriter. I will look into the Local Talk Bridge option to make
sure I am understanding my limitations correctly, but I believe the
stylewriter can't be used as a network printer leaving me with the
option I have been working on, which is to mount the 97 Mac as a volume
on the newer Macs at login and use the print center option to make a
pdf whenever attempting to print from the newer Macs, dropping the
resulting pdf file in a special folder on the 97 Mac thus activating
the folder action script which prints the pdf and feeds the goldfish
(just joking). (No goldfish will be harmed in the making of this
script).
My only problem so far is the print dialog.
Any suggestions still welcomed.
