Since he's used to VB, RealBasic would probably be a much better option. Its
syntax is similar to VB's, and I believe it can be used cross-platform too
(including Mac OS X as well as OS 9).
For something for free, Dialog Director scripting addition might be worth
the trouble and might be sufficient.
