Excel cell background color / Dictionary lookup

Simple (but too specific) question:

How do I set the background color of a range in excel? (already have the range)

More generic question, answering which would probably help me answer the previous one myself:

How do you search the dictionaries? Is there any sort of search facility or do you have to guess and hope Google is your friend?

Also, is there a way to look up something you find in the docs, a-la hypertext? For instance, in Microsoft Excel dictionary, Table Suite > Classes > range. I'm looking for something that sets the background color. I take a wild guess that it's something to do with /font object/ proprty (OK, it's read-only, but humor me or answer question 1 above), which I see is a /font/. How do I find /font/ short of looking through each and every class of each and every suite of the Excel and Standard Additions dictionaries looking for a class called "font"? (And, pertaining to my earlier name resolution issue, how do I know I found the right one?).

Also, in the Elements section, is there any sort of description of what each element is? Maybe format condition is what I'm interested in, but what is it, and what's it for? I've been trying to do something incredibly simple and have started to bang my head against the wall in preference to having to wade through these docs again. I /must/ be doing something wrong. I feel like I'm on the verge of doing amazing things with AppleScript if only I could learn to use the dictionaries like I use the Java API in my day job :-)

Help the newbie, please...

Thanks
