In addition to the suggestions you've got already, you could try to use Smile. Smile is a free AppleScript environment, if you don't know, and it also includes a scriptable text editor. If you switch to the "Enhanced find dialog" in Smile's prefs, the find dialog has a "Rename files" option: you do search-and-replace in the names of the files selected in Finder. Furthermore you can use regular expressions.
