I've never heard of "esset" either, the current

There is an interesting article about German
spelling reformation with information about the
eszet here:
<http://german.about.com/library/weekly/aa092898.htm>
Now, a very off-topic question about the eszet/ß:
I am almost certain that my college German
professor (who was ancient when I took the class
in the '70s) referred to the character as a
blaustaff (my spelling may be off: she pronounced
it as "blauw-staff, where the "auw" was
pronounced like the "ow" in cow).
Could Mark or a native German speaker comment on this?
Is blaustaff some unspeakable obscenity that I've
unwittingly typed, the name of something else
entirely, or just a figment of my inaccurate
recall? :-0
Thanks,
