Whatever clues you are following, they have misled you; grow area 1 of
window "Search messages" is the bottom right corner where you drag to
resize the window.

I think you're out of luck -- it looks like it's the only element not
accessible.

See Bill Cheeseman's message, although I think his suggestion that there
are two useable tools is overly gracious.
