I'll probably get savaged by the list wolves for this one, but...

The problem has been known for years and discussed regularly here and
elsewhere, so you'd think folk'd just apply this rule automatically by now,
but there you go. (Actually, you'd think Apple and/or third-parties would've
had the sense to create libraries containing all these basic functions years
ago and render 95% of these discussions completely moot, but that's another
story...)

Below (at end) is a repeat of a similar question and Nigel's answer from
2003. Paul B., Arthur K. and others have also offered explanations of this
speed method, as well as additional examples and uses (and humor), over the
years.

Have any of you masters considered compiling a FAQ (I know one exists for
the mailing list itself, but I mean for Applescript) which clearly and
concisely documents all these well known issues? Or perhaps not so much a
FAQ, but rather an AWE (arcane wisdom enumeration) which details these sorts
of flaws in Applescript and the workarounds for them. I'm sure many list
lurkers (myself included) would find such a document extremely helpful.

PS - I don't hold out much hope that anyone will actually compile one
because, frankly, I think you guys enjoy dusting off this conversation every
now and then and smacking each other around. ;-}
