There's a published script called MessageLaser--I'm too lazy to look
up the author or URL--that allows you to enter comments in the Finder
comments field of the underlying message file in Tiger Mail; these
are then searchable via Spotlight. But (setting aside the speed
issues and other current limitations of Spotlight) there's a limit to
how useful something like that is without built-in support in the
mail client user interface.
