Check Server Availability

  • Subject: Check Server Availability

All,

One of my programs does a version check when it launches. The server is reads the version file from is not accessible from everywhere (ie. behind a firewall). If a student is on campus, the program can access the server without problems. If they are off campus (non princeton ip address) the program will sit there for a minute trying to contact the server until it fails.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can add a server availability check to the start of my program? I want it to be as fast as possible. I don't want to have to wait for the version check to fail before the user can move on.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

-Rhon
