My version of Eudora (5.2) crashes from time to time - due to having too

It may be worthwhile to upgrade to 6.2. I went from 4.3.3 to 6 and skipped the 5.x upgrades for the most part - well, ran one for a short time - and have not had any crashing problems with 6.x. I see you're using the paid version of 5.2, so it would probably mean paying for the upgrade or living with sponsored mode. Is it worth it to pay? That's hard to answer.

Afterwards one has to "rebuild" the mailboxes (which are actually just text files). After this many of the messages have their status rendered as "?" -
which isn't in the official list of statuses they should be able to be.

In v6.x it is in the official list. The "?" status is designated "recovered" in the list, though when getting the status returned in a script it still gives you «constant ****euS».

Asking what the status of the message is via AS gets:
«constant ****euS»
(those are left and right << >> brackets).

Trying to set the status of that message doesn't seem to work: it just
sticks the same way.

Setting it back to "already read" works in v6.

tell application "Eudora"
set status of front message to already read
end tell

Anyone managed to conquer this?

Sorry, I can't test it because I don't have 5.2 installed, but upgrading conquers it. If you upgrade it may solve the crashing problem which would remove the need to reset the messages in the first place.

I'd like to run a script which would reset
the status of such messages to something like "already read".

Someone else with 5.2 will have to chime in regarding whether or not it's a bug in that version.
