Thanks for the detailed description of the record locking problems. I guess the best thing for now is to try to commit the record when you can (in the problem I had, the script was initiated from FileMaker, so a Commit was an easy solution) and, if that fails, create a message that's intelligible to the user. Sometimes manual intervention will be necessary, such as gently removing the mouse from the hand of a co-worker who feel asleep with a database open ;)

One of the nice things about FileMaker 7 is that it allows you to separate the user interface from the data files, but it doesn't solve the record locking problem either, although perhaps unchecking the "Save record changes automatically" option would help.

The idea of doing the application in ASStudio is interesting. But, for someone with a complex UI in FileMaker already, that's a large amount of rework!
