There certainly *are* file extensions in that OS. (Okay, I'm guessing you meant that they're irrelevant to the OS itself; but certainly it's easy to conjure up a scenario in which one would want to script the removal of, say, ".html" or ".jpg" from a series of filenames.)

Those are simply part of the file's name in OS 9 and earlier; they have no special significance to the OS or to the Finder. The concept of "displayed name" doesn't exist there.
