Exactly what amount of system performance degradation do you get?

FWIW, I use a stay-open applet with an on idle hanlder that every 5 seconds
asks iTunes for the current track. It's been running continuously for at
least 4 months without any hick-ups and only eats about 1% CPU (according to
top) on a G4/400 running 10.3.9.
