Both QuickTime Player and iTunes contain a 'duration' command. I haven't done much scripting with iTunes except for a little utility to convert sound file types. You should be able to tell application "iTunes" to return the duration of any sound file, even if it's not in an iTunes library. Try it and see what happens.
