I have found the "Active" one which quite simply has the newest modification date. Interestingly, as John Baltutis mentioned, it is not settable from the Property List Editor because it belongs to Root and I'm logged in as Admin.

A search reveals 9 com.apple.screensavers on my machine. 7 of them are in /Users...../ByHost and have 8 "digit" hex numbers between ...saver. and .plist. One of them includes the word slideshow. Several are quite old (from
10.2 days in one case). The other two are in an application package.
I'll get back with results of further testing on these.

Understood, Adam - just making sure we're comparing apples with
apples on our respective systems. BTW, I see that, of John's four
com.apple.screensaver.XXX plist files, only one actually contains an
idleTime key. Is this also the case with your seven files?

Now why didn't I think of that? ;-)

For me, John, the script changes the slider position/value in the
PrefPane (when System Preferences is reopened after running the
script). Apparently that's not the case for Adam, so I'm not yet sure
what's going on there. (If he has more than one file containing an
idleTime key, then there should be a relatively simple fix for that.)
Here, the physical idle time appears to be correct after the
screensaver engine has been activated once - which is why the later
version of the script (posted 18 Feb 2006, at 03:25) includes a
routine to run the engine briefly.
However, it still remains to be seen whether the approach works on
other machines...
