If you want a progress meter with curl you can open a Terminal.app window just for the purpose. Curl writes a progress line to stderr and used returns to overwrite the same line as it goes. I use these with BBEdit worksheets but they can also be used with AppleScripts.

<ftp://ftp.macnauchtan.com/Software/Progress/tView.text> readme 4 kB
<ftp://ftp.macnauchtan.com/Software/Progress/tViewInit> set up Terminal.app window 3kB
<ftp://ftp.macnauchtan.com/Software/Progress/tViewCmd> execute a curl command 2 kB
