Searching for cells/rows/columns in Excel

I've been told that in the Windows world, you can write VB scripts to let
you manage data in Excel spreadsheets as if it were more like a
database--e.g. returning the third column of all rows where the fifth
column starts with a certain string. Anyone know if this sort of thing
is doable via Applescript as well, and if so, are there any good
resources that would let an experienced scripter in other languages but
relative Applescript newbie get up to speed on how to do so?

TIA,

Sweth.
