sorry if i misunderstood your thread but writing BOM for UTF-8 is at
least unuseful or might create prob.
It's not true that it's unuseful - it clearly marks the file as being
encoded in UTF-8. Furthermore, there exist applications which require
the BOM, even on UTF-8 files, and I just assumed Richard was dealing
with one of those.
It's true that Unicode-awareness-limited apps may choke on the BOM,
but there's no perfect solution that works for every case.
