sorry if i miss-understood your thread but writing BOM for UTF-8 is
at least unusefull nor might cretaes prob.
I think the OP stated explicitly that the program he uses requires the BOM.
however if you add the BOM this might confuse parsers (xml or php)
because they want to see a "<" as the first character.
Will definitely confuse non Unicode-savvy parsers, but I suppose that
most Unicode-savvy parsers will handle gracefully the BOM.
As an example, I think that Smile (which includes many things
including a XML parser) writes the BOM if you change a UTF-8 file
where it first detected the BOM when opening.
