There's something else amiss here.

The second comma shouldn't actually be there, and doesn't appear in the System Preferences samples - or the dates in other applications. Again, I can add the second comma to a custom format and the result is as it should be:

 -->	date:date "Friday, 5 January, 2007 00:00:00"
	string:"Friday, 5 January, 2007 00:00:00"
	date string:"Friday, 5 January, 2007"
	short date string:"05/01/2007"
