Thanks to everyone for your help. I am going with Mark's and Kurt's
suggestion for now. My script runs fine now.

I only needed to run 1 against 1a etc. one time through the list no further
iterations. It was basically for the purpose of overlaying 50,000 pdfs onto
another set of pdfs. And the modified script does it at 1000 an hour - I
don't have the final pdfs yet but the tests are working fine.
