True. Begs the question as to what is "pure English"
though.
I disagree. It doesn't beg a question at all because the
question is irrelevant, even if you substitute "pure Applescript"
for "pure English".
Actually, it doesn't "beg the question", because
"beg the question" doesn't mean "beg or demand that the
question be asked", which is how most people use it these days
(incorrectly). That phrase already has a perfectly good meaning and if
people want to say that so and so "demands that we raise the
question", then say it that way. Please don't say it begs the
question. It doesn't.
The modern "begs the question" is the shortened
form of "beggar the question" which is an _expression_ in
formal logic that is best illustrated with a quote from the web site
of Paul Brians of WSU English Dept.
"An
argument that improperly assumes as true the very point the speaker is
trying to argue for is said in formal logic to "beg the question."
Here is an example of a question-begging argument: "This painting is
trash because it is obviously worthless." "
Take the opportunity to educate your friends and
colleagues. Instances like this force us to ask the question,
"what's wrong with the education system?"
