Just my two cents on the subject:
Despite what flaws/errors/bugs there have been in some dictionaries, Apple is STILL the largest provider of scriptable applications on the Mac. Period.
Beyond that, the fact that they continue to provide innovative solutions like Image Events, System Events, and Database Events as well as "do shell script" to give us more access to the underlying system.
I think we're all long past having any delusions that AppleScript is, or will ever be, anything other than a minor bit-player in the Apple scheme of things.
If that were true, Apple wouldn't have gone to all the trouble to create AS Studio, giving us almost total access to the Cocoa classes from AS. AS Studio gives us much of the ability that Visual Basic gave to Windows 95 users many years ago.
AS is a core technology. And it IS being maintained, updated, and fixed with every release of the OS.
