Once again, sticking my neck out without good reason...

Monitoring other forums fairly regularly, I've seen quite a number of
posts regarding unexpected problems with permissions in Leopard...

I don't recall whether the reported problems were limited to upgrades or
included factory installed systems on new hardware as well.

Try Apple Discussions - Using Leopard, or the MacOSXHints System forums.
