Let's start with a frustrating scenario: You have a folder full of
alias files. Lots of them. And you know that one of them points to a
file you want, so you double-click it. Instead of opening the file,
you get "Finder got an error: Can't get original item of alias
file ... ". In other words, the disk containing the file isn't
mounted. (In AppleScript, asking for the 'original item' of the alias
file gives you the same error message.)
So you mount a FW external drive, only to get the error again. And you
try first one DVD, then another, but no luck. (What was the name of
that #%$! disk?)
In OS 9, the error message asked you to mount a disk named
"something". In OS X, you just get "Finder got an error: ...".
There must be a work-around that would let me read the path to the
original item from the alias file, even if the original item is not
mounted. This information is surely within the alias file. But how do
I read it? Perhaps a 'do shell script ... ' is in order here.
(I'm trying to avoid the other work-around. When AppleScript creates
the alias file, write the path to the original item into the alias
file's comment.)
