In Icelandic (and hence in the singer Björk's name), there is no
general umlaut; ö is actually a separate letter, and the only one
whose form appears to have such a "diacritical mark". The same
letter is written ø in Norwegian.
I'm not talkin' Icelandic. I'm talking local English colloquialism.
Like the "crüe" in Motley Crüe is English (ain't it?), and we
pronounce it "kru". But björked is pronounced as above. There's no
particular reason -- whoever got there first.
