Thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to giving rb-appscript 0.5.1 a spin!
But Just to throw out another opinion: I liked Ruby when Ruby wasn't
cool (i.e. before Rails came along); I'm a fan of and frequent agreeer
with has; and I think appscript (in all of its host languages) is an
impressive achievement - but I still use AppleScript. Just sayin'.
Before certain people clap their hands with glee, though, you do have
to consider the source. I enjoy learning lots of different
programming languages as a hobby. I've ported little programs into
upwards of 60 different languages just for fun. (Yeah, I know,
strange idea of "fun".) So AppleScript was a language I was going to
learn anyway once I had a Mac to write it on, regardless of any
practical need. It has come in handy, to be sure, but more
importantly, I haven't yet run into any problem that I needed to
abandon it to solve.
Aside from my avocational inclinations, I also have to use many
different languages in my day job, and have become quite adept at
switching between them; I don't regard such switching as onerous. I
continue to write new scripts in whatever language the mood strikes me
to use (modulo the requirements, of course); Ruby may be my favorite
language at the moment, but some things flow out of my fingers faster
in Perl, and some in bash. And some in AppleScript.
Besides, I earn part of my paycheck by developing for the Second Life
virtual world. The programming language used to automate objects in
Second Life, LSL, makes AppleScript look utterly flawless in
comparison. Heck, it makes me miss *PHP*. So I have a high tolerance
for compulinguistic, uh, suboptimalities. ;-)
