My experience is that you don't have to worry about that checkbox. There is no command to check/uncheck it, but, if the window of the folder is CLOSED, then setting the folder to list view (for example) will cause the "Always open in list view" box to be checked. (If the window is open, you can't change the checkbox at the top of the View Options window.)
