My experience is that you don't have to worry about that checkbox. There is no command to check/uncheck it, but, if the window of the folder is CLOSED, then setting the folder to list view (for example) will cause the "Always open in list view" box to be checked. (If the window is open, you can't change the checkbox at the top of the View Options window.)

unfortunately, with Leopard, if you do not check "Always open in 'Icon
View'", that folder will open in random state (view by items for example
if its parent now use that view).
This recalls me Windows XP: it never opens one of my windows with the
icons at the same location… (certainly my fault!).

PS: I use custom icons in these folders and so I want to see them (I
spend enough time to generate them!); nice to have a Macintosh (MacBook
in this case).
