I've never used stationery in Mail, so I know nothing about this short conversation. But, being curious about this, I looked up "stationery" in Mail's Help. Bingo. (I had to create a new message, then use View/Customize Toolbar... to see the Show Stationery button.) Interesting!

Different kind of stationery, and something I found completely superfluous. I had completely forgotten about it, having removed that button the first day I got the version of mail that has it.

Well, maybe. So I did a little experimenting.

You can create new stationery messages in Mail and then "Save as Stationery..." in the File menu. After that, things go a little ... buggy. The new stationery is visible in the "Custom" section of the visible stationery files, but seems, at first, not to work. After multiple attempts, I discovered that Mail is just really, really slow when you choose a custom stationery file. (This does not seem to be the case with Apples stationery files, however.)

Text only stationery files seem to work correctly.

My next question was: "Where are these stationery files stored?"

After some searching, I finally, I discovered the folder ~/Library/ Caches/Mail/Stationery. This contains .plist files which store references to files in
~/Library/Application Support/Mail/Stationery/Apple/Contents/Resources/ Custom/Contents/Resources/ These file names look like "Example.mailstationery".
Apple's stationery files are located in the folder
./Library/Application Support/Apple/Mail/Stationery/Apple/Contents/ Resources/

If you try to open one of these .mailstationery files, you won't see anything. These files are bundles and you have to look within its / Contents/Resources/ folder. The text for the stationery is saved in a "content.html"
file.

I created yet another stationery file, this time with a picture (.png). I can create a new message with this file, but the picture does not appear in the new message. The picture file is stored in the .mailstationery bundle, however. (Does anyone know what might be wrong here?)

And the bad news ... the word "stationery" does not even appear in Mail's dictionary.
