Tim,
As someone who's quite familiar with both the technical *and*
social/business side of this issue, all I can say is it's simply not a
battle I often fight anymore - myth dispelling is only useful insofar as it
prevents errors and improves quality... when it's quibbling with a client
over correct use of a technical term, in my experience it's best to
accommodate them as long as you understand the requirements and the client
is not shooting themselves in their own foot by requesting a DPI change.
In some cases I've been able to persuade clients through testing and
validation; in others, as long as there's no harm done, then they get what
they want and are able to be comforted in getting their DPI, however
irrelevant it may seem, since often the person doing the image buying is
not technical enough to get in the middle of a spec battle.
In any case, no it's not a *myth* - since many applications *do* use the
dpi value then to suggest it has no role is also a bit myopic - it may be
silly, and it is true that all that really matters is the pixel dimensions
since "DPI" is just metadata that's easily changed but pixels are the basic
unit of content in an image, but as long as workflow tools use, or even
just check, dpi then being able to set it is important enough. Tail wagging
the dog, maybe, but still necessary.
