Ok, so it's not a universal problem? I still *have* Courier, but it's
scrambled. By which I mean, the glyphs seem intact, but their mapping
to code points has been randomly shuffled. Suddenly <pre> became
short for "prevent reading".
At least a few other prople on the Apple fora had this problem, too,
and their only solution was "don't do that" - I.e. use a different
font, Courier New being the obvious choice.

Anyway, sorry for the OT thread. Totally not AS related other than
the fact that I was playing along at home with the thread about losing
script editor format preferences when I noticed the problem.
