Here's something else that might shed light on what you've observed about
how windows and their dimensions are related when navigating in the Finder
(at least in Snow Leopard). If "in a new Finder window" isn't checked,
holding down the command or the control key when opening (double-clicking) a
folder has the same effect. If you open a folder without one of these
modifier keys down, then do it again with one of 'em down, you're too late
to preserve the window's original bounds, so it looks as though it may have
never had any that were unique, and it will open with the same bounds except
for a slight offset down and to the right. That's down and to the right, not
like Kevin Costner and Zapruder. (Gee, I'm a case today! :) ).
Anyway, this can be difficult to observe or grasp (at least for me), because
you can't go back and forth too easily due to the fact that once the new
window takes the values of the old window, they're stuck. So try with
command or control first to see the difference.
