The change in alias specifier behaviour occurred in 10.5 ('Object specifiers other than application and date specifiers, in particular alias "..." and POSIX file "...", are not evaluated at compile time, and will be left exactly as originally typed. [4444698]'). However, if it was still working for you in 10.5 then perhaps something else has changed in 10.6? Might be worth filing a radar report and see what happens.
