I'm not sure it goes back to Leopard. The "open alias f" version only
fails for me in Snow Leopard. It's part of a library that's used 100s

The change in alias specifier behaviour occurred in 10.5 ('Object
specifiers other than application and date specifiers, in particular
alias "..." and POSIX file "...", are not evaluated at compile time,
and will be left exactly as originally typed. [4444698]'). However, if
it was still working for you in 10.5 then perhaps something else has
changed in 10.6? Might be worth filing a radar report and see what
happens.
