Stepping back a pace or two, it really is a pretty crummy language that
behaves this way and isn't fixed after all these years, no? Users should not
have to work around stuff like this, reinventing the wheel every time
someone runs into it for the first, or hundredth, time. I doubt it's even
written up in the documentation (ASLG), or is it?
