My life got a whole lot easier when curl became available.

On OS 9, yeah I'm writing this on an 8500, Interarchy is nicely scriptable for FTP

But life is even better with scp using ssh if you're on your own network or  have fixed IP addresses. If you take the time to set up ssh with ~/.ssh directories and known-hosts and authorized_keys files you can jus do shell script to an scp command with POSIX file paths on both machines.
