What kind of computer are you running your script on? I've discovered that newer laptops with options for optimizing performance vs. saving battery power create a *HUGE* difference in speed when scripting the Finder like this. do shell script is much, much faster, but if you are running your script on a newer laptop with Leopard or Snow Leopard, plug in the laptop, make sure the percentage of battery life is above average - say above 40% or so, and check the radio button that says "optimize performance" in System Preferences > Energy Settings. If you're on a laptop and this is the issue, your finder script will increase speed by approximately 70-80%.
