Hey Luther,

Actually I consider this to be the correct behavior and was highly PO'd when they changed it.  I didn't consider it overcomplicated at all - merely natural Mac behavior.

When I wanted to create a base menu I just put in script-apps:

set hf to (get path to home folder)
tell application "Finder"
	activate
	open hf
end tell

Not as easy as aliases I grant you but effective.
