I tested this one in both Snow and Lion. I can't get problem 2 to reappear.
Perhaps due to the change? Or perhaps not?

This solution works, but it's no better than using a .fileloc file and is way overly complicated.
So I'm not going to do this.

This still seems to be an overly complicated solution to a simple problem that ought to have a simple solution.

(in other words ... there ought to be a preference for this. Or perhaps the Dock should require the user to press the option key to follow aliases into folders. Who at Apple should see this?)

I'm thinking of filing a feature request on this. Using the option key may make everyone happy.
