Sounds like a likely solution.

Why a plist file though? I've never used plist files in Applescript (at least not intentionally).

Are there examples somewhere of how a plist file could be used?

Why don't you just put the property for the source string in an xml plist file and then read it from that? It would be easier than loading a script alias that contains the property that you are looking for.
