Apple missed a bet.
AAPL was once Apple Computer, Inc.
The name got changed to a simple Apple, Inc. which was intended to allow for things that were not computers, mostly a technique that sells music with a tinge of copyright infringement with someone else - Beatles?
Pretty soon, along the lines of iOS I expect a change to
Apple Entertainment Inc.
after which anyone in a technically oriented business will install Linux. That's pretty much happened here already. The lady of the house loves her iPhone, iPad, and Lion. The iPAD gestures are as hard to figure out as those needed for proper handling of women. Try rotating a page so you can see the circuit schematic that was published on a page that needs to be read after turning it sideways. Now try it again while reading the journal in bed.
I split my time between a ubuntu box and this Apple 8500 which I run with MPW and pretty much ignore Finder. MPW, Excel 5.1, and Eudora 5 are the main workhorses. MPW, with its "run AppleScript" tool works fine and it doesn't change every few months. I had real hopes for UNIX on Macintosh, as I used it in 1975 on DEC machinery.
Unfortunately The Next folks have gone too far in an attempt to make it work for the masses who really seek entertainment. If Apple really cared they would make MPW, or an MPW like shell, available for OS neXt. BBEdit worksheets just don't hack it. The OS neXt finder can "goto" an FTP site with a username and password. That sounds good but just try to upload a file. That's deliberately made impossible, probably because it's not considered safe for ordinary users.
There is no AppleScript for Linux. Dbus doesn't come close.
But my Apple stock with a tax basis of $10 makes it hard to complain about their business choices. Best wishes to Steve.
Sigh.

Applescript syntax is like English spelling:
Roughly, though not thoroughly, thought through.
