I tend to disagree.
The "Capital ß" character in Unicode is pretty controversial as far as I know and is actually not part of the official German orthography (yet?).
So for now I am happy enough with the "SS" version (although the acronym carries unpleasant connotations).
The "SS" as such hasn't anything to do with typewriters but is due to the fact that German words don't start with an ß, so there is no need for a capital ß unless you capitalise whole words. Personally, I find the present typographic solutions not really convincing (see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Großes_ß).
