> The "SS" as such hasn't anything to do with typewriters but is due to the fact that German words don't start with an ß, so there is no need for a capital ß unless you capitalise whole words. Personally, I find the present typographic solutions not really convincing (see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Großes_ß).
This whole argument is one reason why my SmartString class is valuable. My upper/lower/titlecase routines use a customizable table so you can ensure that the transformations you want are properly made, as it’s all in AppleScript. Currently the table is a unicode to unicode single character mapping, but it would be simple enough to use a list in place of a string so that you could do a multi-character mapping, if that were necessary.
I’m not overly worried about it as I’m a classic American monolingual ethnocentrist, but I’m happy to oblige the world’s assorted conventions.
As such, SmartString is delivered as pure-AppleScript source, free for the use and modification.
It adjusts KŒNIG properly, and I just updated it with the ß to ẞ transformation, because it is simple, ignoring the argument about whether it’s the most accurate transformation or not. ;)

Sorry to keep flogging it, but software you can control is worth a lot these days.
