Thanks for the guidance, Bruce.  On further fiddling, I found I that I can (via File -> Export -> Report...) export an .xls file that will open (with one evidently minor error) in Excel.

P.S. -- I'm still looking for an approach to edit (or create and delete) transactions in the .qdfm file from AppleScript. I'm thinking maybe System Events with Quicken frontmost?

Any beter ideas?
