Well, I booted from an external usb2 drive with a CCC backup on it, and my App was very slow. So, I bit the bullet and downloaded and restored Mountain Lion as a last resort. Bit of a difference; files that took just over a minute now process in 30 seconds. Still no faster than my old system, but much more acceptable. I used migration assistant to move the information over, and must have ticked too many boxes. Live & learn
Considering Shane's changes, and the fact that I'm also using a shell script to check-for/make over a dozen new folders instead of the Finder, I think the lack of any speed increase must be due to the 5400 rpm drive. I don't know the reasons for not using a 7200 rpm, but if the difference of a few dollars is the reason it would annoy me.
It will be interesting to see if the folder of files gets pushed to the SSD part of the fusion drive, and if that speeds things up at all. Does anyone know how to check what's stored on the SSD?
Overall, the SSD mounts apps fast, but I think ApplescriptObjC apps might run a bit slow, or no faster.
Regards
Santa

I wonder if there's something in what James is suggesting. Run Disk Utility? Can you rework the app to put the searched folder on an external drive, to see if that makes a difference?
