Something similar happened to me at work (my goal was to get Safari to stop viewing PDFs via Acrobat without uninstalling it altogether). I believe I did what is outlined in the below link, where you just get rid of the plugin and Safari behaves like it did before.
The reason I couldn’t just remove Acrobat is because we have PDF forms and things that were somehow created to be only compatible with Acrobat. So I need the program, but only for that one purpose. I certainly don’t need it for viewing PDFs in the browser window.
