Encrypt/Decrypt a Text File

I have a file of passwords on my laptop which I keep encrypted in case the laptop gets stolen. I'm using Microsoft Word to perform the encrypt/decrypt function, but launching Word every time I need an unfamiliar password seems a bit cumbersome. I did a quick Google research and found that people are using Disk Utility to make a password-protected disk image. That seems even more cumbersome than using Word.
Maybe there's a product that you're using?
To write an AppleScript to encrypt or decrypt a text file given a password doesn't seem like it would be difficult. Has anyone done that?
