True. He reports no system or mail-specific plugins of any kind, for what that's worth. I'll see if he is willing to set up a new account and give it a shot there. The point is something is causing it. I don't know what, but I do know that for me the first step in troubleshooting is always to determine whether the problem is local to my user account or not. Hence:
create a new user account in System Prefs...Users & Groups. Set up the mail account that's causing the trouble and test it there.
Until you've done that, you're just fumbling in the dark.

I'm really puzzled.

Now but its message didn't appear here.
