William,
Just tried your script with CC and CS5 and the bounds of the graphic are
the size of the graphic, not the artboard. Verified the bounds using both
Preview and by dropping the graphic into InDesign - which both correctly
show the bounds as tightly wrapped around the graphic, not the artboard.
Obviously if you open the eps back up in Illustrator it will show you the
original art board, not the EPS bounds - which is expected behavior.
What application are you using to determine the bounds are the artboard
size?
It also might be worth ensuring there isn¹t something unique about your
graphic that is making it difficult for the EPS to determine the bounds -
create a fresh 8.5x11 page with a couple of simple boxes and run your
script to see if the bounds are correct in Preview or InDesign.
If it looks like it¹s unique to one graphic send me the file and I will
try your script on that file in my environment.
