I like that it is hidden, until I need it.
It saves some pixels of screen real estate and gives the screen  a "cleaner" look.

I am sorry that you haven’t found a defaults setting that turns off those animations that aggravates you. I’d file a bug-report, if I were you, where lacking defaults setting for turning off those animations is the bug.
